(editor's note: for background to this article
please see critique of Peter
Phillips' Conspiracies, Plots and Other Anti-democratic Notions)
According to the sixth edition of "Who's Running America? The
Clinton Years by Thomas Dye: "The power of the nation's largest
foundations derive from their support of significant research
projects in social problems, arts, and humanities...The major
foundations are in the forefront of national policymaking...The
most influential policy-planning group in foreign affairs is the
Council on Foreign Relations...The Council on Foreign Relations
was founded in 1921 and supported by grants from the Rockefeller
and Carnegie foundations and later the Ford Foundation...It initiates
new policy directions by first commissioning scholars to undertake
investigations of foreign policy questions. Its studies are usually
made with the financial support of the foundations." Yet Project
Censored rarely mentions that critical reporting about foundations
like the MacArthur Foundation or Ford Foundation is generally
not done by either the U.S. mainstream media or the U.S. alternative
media.
One reason might be that during the 1990s the MacArthur Foundation
helped subsidize Project Censored's alternative media activity.
Other funders of Project Censored since the 1990s have included
the Angelina Fund, the Threshold Foundation, the CS Fund, Foundation
for National Progress/Mother Jones Magazine Board Member Anita
Roddick and her Body Shop International, the Office of the President
& Office of the Provost at Sonoma State University and the Working
Assets Inc. telecommunications company.
Regarding Peter Phillips' article, perhaps it's a response to
the Gore
Vidal article and/or part of an Establishment Left Gatekeeper
attempt to begin creating a "parallel 9/11 conspiracy journalism
sub-culture" which brings back into the Moyers/Soros/Ford/Working
Assets-subsidized alternative media "parallel anti-war" orbit
the internet readers and KPFA listeners who have begun to look
to the more independent web sites for their 9/11 information and
alternative analysis?
