Let’s face it; nobody exactly loves cleaning their house. Unless you’re one of those rare people who gets a kick from the sheer thrill of cleaning, chances are that you aren’t all that excited when it comes time to clean your house. According to statistics, as many as three out of four people admit to having some area of their house that they used to hide clutter.  (You know the drawer we’re talking about.)

While it’s okay to throw junk in a drawer once in a while, failing to clean your home thoroughly every now and then can seriously start to impact your health. Everything from failing to dust your shelves to letting your garbage can get too full can start to play a role in your overall well-being.

Here are some of the ways that your house cleaning habits can affect your overall health.

Poor Air Quality

The amount of dirt and clutter in your home directly affects the quality of air that you breathe. It’s important that you dust and wipe down surfaces regularly to get rid of particles that you’re breathing in. This also includes making sure that you take care of your HVAC system. Failing to clear out the filters can result in Serious respiratory issues down the road.

Skin Rashes

If you’re the kind of person that hates making your bed, then you probably hate washing your sheets too. However, clean bedding plays a big role in your skin’s health. Not only can bugs start to take over a dirty bed, but every time you sleep in your bed, your body sheds skin.

Every night your sheets accumulate more and more dead skin particles. If you start to notice that you have itchy or red skin, it’s likely a reflection of the cleanliness of your sheets. Wash your sheets at least once every two weeks to avoid skin issues.

Food Poisoning

If there are items in your fridge that you haven’t opened in quite a while, then your fridge could be a dangerous place. If food rots in your fridge, it could put you and your family at risk of food poisoning.

Not only that, but you could even be exposing yourself to something as serious as E Coli. It’s important that you check your fridge regularly to ensure that nothing has passed its expiration date. Food poisoning isn’t something you want you or anyone in your household to experience.

Fungus

If you have a carpet that’s gathering all sorts of bacteria and dander, then it could potentially give you foot fungus. It’s important that you clean your carpets regularly and avoid wearing outside shoes on them. Over time, neglected carpets can develop disgusting particles. It’s in your best interest to keep them as clean as possible, especially if you have children.
